DNV has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HD HMD) for the design of an ammonia dual-fuel medium gas carrier (MGC) with a forward accommodation layout. The AiP was handed over at Gastech 2025 to D.J. Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Initial Design Division and Detailed Design Division at HD HMD, by Vidar Dolonen, Regional Manager for Korea and Japan at DNV.
The concept shifts the crew accommodation block to the fore section, creating additional usable space on board. This enables integration of technologies such as carbon capture systems, alternative fuels, and other energy efficiency or emission reduction solutions. The arrangement also supports the installation of an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system and allows flexibility for adopting future technologies in line with evolving environmental requirements.

Vidar Dolonen noted the spatial challenges of new fuel and energy systems. “One of the challenges associated with alternative fuels and energy efficiency enhancing technologies is optimizing design for the space required for onboard installation.
