Belgian gas carrier owner EXMAR has taken delivery of MGC ANTWERPEN, the world’s first ocean-going vessel equipped with a dual-fuel ammonia engine, marking a major milestone in the maritime industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
The 46,000 cbm midsize gas carrier was developed in collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, WinGD, Nord Gas Solutions and Lloyd’s Register. Designed to transport both ammonia and LPG, the vessel can operate on low-carbon ammonia fuel, enabling near-zero emissions operations.
According to EXMAR, the vessel can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional ships, exceeding current IMO emissions reduction requirements.
Ammonia Moves from Concept to Commercial Reality
The delivery represents a significant step in the commercial deployment of ammonia as a marine fuel. While ammonia has long been viewed as a promising zero-carbon fuel candidate, concerns around safety, crew training and regulatory readiness have slowed adoption.
EXMAR said operational safety was a key focus throughout the vessel’s development, leveraging more than four decades of experience in transporting ammonia and liquefied gases. The project included extensive risk assessments, crew training programmes and close cooperation with industry partners and regulatory authorities.
First of Four Ammonia-Fuelled Gas Carriers
MGC ANTWERPEN is the first vessel in a series of four dual-fuel ammonia-powered midsize gas carriers that will be named after Belgian cities.
The project strengthens EXMAR’s position in ammonia transportation and highlights growing industry confidence in ammonia as a future marine fuel as shipping seeks pathways to meet increasingly stringent decarbonisation targets.
Carl-Antoine Saverys, Chief Executive Officer of EXMAR Group, said the delivery demonstrates that ammonia propulsion has moved beyond the demonstration phase.
“Ammonia propulsion is no longer theoretical—we are deploying it. Change comes through execution, not debate. This achievement reflects collective expertise and our commitment to drive sustainable shipping forward.”
