PIL orders seven methanol-ready feeders for Asia and Pacific Islands trades

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has ordered seven methanol-ready container vessels from China’s Huanghai Shipbuilding to expand regional capacity and renew its fleet. Announced on 5 November 2026, the order covers ships of 1,400 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) each, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2030.

The Singapore-based carrier intends to strengthen its intra-Asia and Pacific Islands services, improving connections between smaller ports and major transhipment hubs. The seven vessels represent a combined nominal capacity of 9,800 TEUs.

How are the vessels designed for regional services?

Each ship will measure 172 metres in length and 25 metres in width. PIL has tailored the dimensions to accommodate regional port requirements while maximising carrying capacity.

Propulsion-efficiency equipment will include pre-swirl vanes and propeller boss cap fins. Fixed fire water monitors and cargo hold water spray systems will strengthen firefighting capabilities, while digital systems will support operational and performance monitoring.

Chief Executive Officer Lars Kastrup said the investment would improve regional capacity and efficiency while supporting PIL’s net-zero emissions target for 2050. The carrier selected Huanghai for its technical experience and ability to meet construction and delivery requirements.

What does methanol-ready mean for future operations?

Methanol readiness provides a pathway for later adoption of the fuel as supply and bunkering infrastructure develop.

Across the industry, fuel-ready designs can involve different levels of preparation. Classification society DNV’s framework, for example, allows owners to specify preparations covering vessel design, fuel tanks, machinery and associated systems for subsequent conversion. The extent of work installed during construction determines what remains necessary before a ship can use its intended alternative fuel.

Equipment manufacturer Caterpillar similarly describes methanol-ready engines as platforms designed with a route towards future methanol dual-fuel capability. It notes that lifecycle greenhouse gas reductions depend particularly on access to low-carbon or renewable methanol.

These considerations make fuel sourcing and conversion planning important alongside the initial shipbuilding investment. Methanol can be stored as a liquid under standard conditions, but its environmental performance depends on how it is produced.

How does the order fit PIL’s wider fleet renewal?

The feeder investment follows PIL’s addition of larger vessels for long-haul trades.

In June 2026, the company named Kota Elok and Kota Elan at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. The 13,000-TEU ships are the first pair in a series of 13 vessels designed to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low-sulphur fuel oil.

PIL identified its Asia–South America service as their intended deployment. Their equipment includes optimised hull forms, fuel-saving coatings and digital technologies supporting onboard automation and performance management.

The two programmes address different parts of PIL’s network, with larger ships supporting intercontinental services and the Huanghai feeders serving regional connections.

Regional connections support PIL’s international reach

Established in Singapore in 1967, PIL serves customers in more than 90 countries through a fleet of around 100 container ships. Its geographical coverage includes Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Oceania and the Pacific Islands.

The company’s feeder network includes Southeast Asia, the Bay of Bengal, India’s east coast and Pacific Island markets. Its Indian subcontinent services combine direct calls with connections through Singapore and Port Klang.

PIL also operates Pacific Island services through Mariana Express Lines, linking island markets with China, Southeast Asia, Japan and Australia. The planned feeder deliveries will support the regional shipping links that connect these markets with its broader international services.
