StormGeo has partnered with China Classification Society (CCS) to enable direct digital sharing of vessel emissions data, supporting verification and environmental compliance for shipping companies in China. Announced in Oslo and Shanghai on 5 November 2026, the partnership connects StormGeo’s s-Insight platform with CCS’s verification services.
The agreement forms part of StormGeo’s expansion strategy in China, where it currently supports approximately 700 vessels with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and vessel performance services. The maritime technology and weather intelligence company is part of Alfa Laval’s Ocean Division.
How will the digital emissions connection work?
Shipping companies using s-Insight for environmental compliance can now transmit validated emissions data directly to CCS through an application programming interface (API), a connection that allows software systems to exchange information.
The integration provides a structured route for transferring data from StormGeo’s platform into CCS’s verification process. According to the companies, it is intended to improve data quality and traceability while making submissions easier for customers using both organisations’ services.
For CCS, the connection establishes a consistent approach to receiving information from StormGeo’s systems. This supports its assessment of customer data and the delivery of emissions verification services.
The arrangement links the collection and validation of vessel information more closely with the organisation responsible for checking that information as part of customers’ compliance work.
What checks were completed before launch?
CCS conducted an on-site assessment of the performance and security of StormGeo’s systems and products before the API was introduced. StormGeo met CCS’s requirements for interface adaptation and evaluation.
Wei Chong, Manager of Software Development at CCS, said the collaboration supported the society’s plans to develop its digital capabilities and international competitiveness.
He highlighted StormGeo’s emissions data collection software and quality assurance services, including their ability to accommodate different vessel categories, emission sources and fuel types. He added that the organisations intended to deepen cooperation to make verification services more convenient and efficient for shipping companies.
Why is emissions data verification increasingly important?
The partnership comes against a wider expansion of shipping’s emissions reporting obligations, which require operators to maintain reliable records of fuel consumption and greenhouse gas output.
Under the International Maritime Organization’s Data Collection System, ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above have been required since January 2019 to collect fuel consumption and other specified data. Annual information is reported to flag administrations for verification before submission to the international database. Since 2023, these records have also supported calculation of ships’ operational carbon intensity.
European requirements add further reporting obligations for vessels undertaking covered voyages. The European Union’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification framework has included methane and nitrous oxide alongside carbon dioxide since January 2024. Shipping companies must submit annual emissions reports verified as satisfactory by an independent verifier.
Methane and nitrous oxide also entered the scope of the EU Emissions Trading System in 2026. The system requires shipping companies to surrender allowances against covered emissions, giving verified emissions information a direct role in carbon compliance.
How does the partnership support StormGeo’s China strategy?
Espen Martinsen, Chief Commercial Officer at StormGeo, described China as an important market in the transformation of global shipping. He said the company was investing in local capabilities, technology and partnerships as part of a long-term commitment to Chinese customers.
Martinsen said combining StormGeo’s technology and maritime experience with CCS’s local knowledge would support more integrated and automated approaches to data verification and environmental compliance.
StormGeo intends to expand its Chinese business significantly over the coming years. The CCS integration adds a direct verification connection for its existing customer base while supporting that broader growth programme.
